Food choices to prevent blood clots

Clotting of the blood is a common phenomenon observed in response to wounds and cuts. A gel-like mass is formed by platelets and fibrin in the blood to stop bleeding. It is called a blood clot. Blood clotting is beneficial for the healing of wounds but on the other hand, it can be equally deadly as well.

Blood clots, when lodge deep within the veins of legs, cause deep vein thrombosis (DVT). In this case, the clot blocks the flow of blood to the affected area. Moreover, it can also break loose and travel to the heart or lungs where it has the potential to cause death. Certain illnesses like cancer, heart disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and inherited clotting disorders increase the risk for DVT.

Fortunately, DVT is treatable but you can avoid the situation with some simple yet healthy dietary options. Following are some food choices that can help you to prevent such a dangerous condition naturally. These foods are easy to consume and bring favorable results significantly.

Water

Dehydration is one serious contributing factor to blood clots. Blood thickens with insufficient intake of water. This might increase the risks of developing clots. Experts recommend six to eight 8-ounce glasses of water each day.

The color of your urine clearly shows if your water intake is sufficient or not. An adequate intake of water allows the production of light yellow or nearly clear urine. Orange or brown colored urine indicates low intake of water which may trigger blood clots and DVT.

Kiwi

Kiwi stands out among all fruits in terms of preventing dangerous blood clots. Researchers from the University of Oslo in Norway suggest that 2-3 kiwi fruits each day lower the activation of platelets. Note platelet activation is the mechanism by which blood clots. Thus, kiwis can lower the risks of DVT by preventing clot formation. Moreover, kiwi fruit lowers the levels of cholesterol.

Apart from kiwi, fruits that are rich in salicylates effectively inhibit blood clotting. These may include

  • Oranges
  • Strawberries
  • Blueberries
  • Cranberries
  • Grapes
  • Raisins
  • Prunes

Olive oil

As compared to vegetable oils, olive oil is much healthier for overall cardiovascular health. It potentially lowers the risk of developing blood clots. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reveals that phenols in the virgin olive oil lower the level of a few clot-promoting substances in the blood. Olive oil is an easy option to be part of your dietary schedules. You can use it for cooking. It can also be infused with garlic and other clot-busting herbs for salads and bread.

Nuts and whole grains

Nuts and whole grains are rich in vitamin E. This vitamin is a natural thinner for blood. It not only reduces your risk of developing the first clot but also stops people, already suffering from DVT, from developing further clots. Walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, oats, wheat, and lentils can be a good option for use.

Limit Trans fat

There are certain food items that promote the formation of clots. Foods rich in Trans fat are few of them. If we avoid the use of such foods, we can keep the risks of DVT at bay.

Saturated and Trans fats increase inflammation and hamper the free and smooth circulation of blood through the vessels. Therefore, experts advise people to downsize on full-fat dairy products, fatty cuts of meat, and junk food snacks both salty and sweet. Packaged or processed foods also come with a shocking amount of fat. Moreover, they have added sugar in them. Thus, people must read labels in the store before buying such products and limit their use.
