Could Tingling At Night Be Due To Underlying Health Conditions?

In modern day life, the deadly diseases of the past no longer exist. The developments in medicine have successfully controlled health conditions such as tuberculosis. In fact, there is a very less chance of someone even reaching the deadly stages of the disease in the first place.

However, new challenges now exist that scientists are also struggling to resolve. Some of these may seem trivial but are interlinked and gradually grow dangerous over time. This is why knowing the symptoms of a number of health conditions is fairly important.

The problem here is that many of the underlying signs are often confused with everyday issues. For instance, tingling is a common problem faced by a big number of people but since it is merely a feeling that can be ignored, people do not take it seriously.

Additionally, feeling tingling sensations at night may actually not just be a ‘feeling’ though people think it is. If a person feels such tingles especially before falling asleep, he may need to visit a doctor and get a proper diagnosis.

This is because while tingling may only be due to laying in an uncomfortable position, it can also indicate a serious health issue. Continue reading to know more about the health problems linked to tingling at night.

What Causes Tingling At Night?

Tingling sensations are common and may many times be due to very trivial reasons. Sitting in the same position can lead to tingling in the legs. However, tingling is also linked to a condition known as peripheral neuropathy.

Peripheral neuropathy is a form of nerve damage that causes numbness in the limbs as well as tingling. There can be a number of reasons for developing this issue. Some of these include:

Exposure to toxins

Whenever a person consumes or is exposed to some particular toxins, it may lead to tingling. Some of those are antifreeze, arsenic, mercury, and thallium. Treatment for this condition is usually done as soon as possible on an urgent basis.

Multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is typically a life-long condition that affects the spinal cord as well as the brain. Tingling in the lower limbs is one of its earliest signs. It is best to get a diagnosis for the condition as soon as possible.

Anxiety is a mental health issue which causes a variety of symptoms including hyperventilation which is heavy breathing. Whenever a person is hyperventilating, there is an imbalance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in his body. This further causes tingling sensations especially in the legs and feet.

The treatment for this is typically the one used for anxiety. Some of the options are medication, cognitive behavioral therapy, and talking therapy.

Repetitive strain injury

Repetitive strain injury or what is also called RSI is the result of doing the same activity over and over again. It is also because of poor posture. The treatment for RSI is using supports, ice packs, and pain relief medication.

Infections are actually one of the most common reasons for having tingling sensations before sleeping. This happens because the nerves become inflamed during an infection. Some common infections linked to tingling are leprosy, AIDS, shingles, hepatitis B and C, shingles, and HIV.

Autoimmune diseases

Some autoimmune diseases cause tingling in both the upper and lower limbs such as celiac, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis. The treatment for this include both lifestyle changes, diet, and medication.

Peripheral artery disease

Peripheral artery disease is a condition which affects the circulatory system and leads to the narrowing of blood vessels and tingling in different parts of the body. It is important to treat this issue on time since it may cause a heart attack or stroke if left untreated.
