Healthy levels of Glutathione can help you to fight obesity, says research

A study, published in the journal Aging Cell, states that the deficiency of glutathione can trigger conditions like obesity. Moreover, it suggests that correcting the levels of glutathione not only reverses the risk of obesity but it also fights against chronic diseases. The researchers have discovered that healthy levels of glutathione restore the fat burning ability of the body. Thus, it triggers weight loss, boosting the overall health of an individual.

About half of the world’s population is fighting obesity and related problems. The health experts recommend lifestyle changes like exercise and healthy diet to improve the situation. Most of the people also go for weight loss supplements. However, these supplements might bring unwanted side effects. Thus, the scientists urge to find more and more natural solutions against obesity and this study play a significant role in this regard.

Glutathione is antioxidant in nature. It is naturally produced by the body however; its production decreases with age. Growing age is the biggest culprit when it comes to the depletion of glutathione. Moreover, exposure to environmental toxins, EMFs, medicines, and pesticides also deplete glutathione. Poor nutrition and improper sleep may also add to the situation.

Apart from aging, we can control other factors to preserve healthy levels of glutathione.

What does the study say?

For the study, the researchers employed mice as test subjects. They were fed with glutathione supplements and evaluated for the weight loss/gain. It was found that the glutathione supplementation led to reduced weight and body fat. In addition, it lowered the risk of developing type-II diabetes among the subjects. Moreover, the supplementation didn’t pose any negative side effects.

The research indicates that a body deficient in glutathione develops excess fat. Plus it experiences a greater level of oxidative stress. This can cause a higher risk of problems like autism, neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson’s, and cardiovascular disease.

The researchers have found that when the body burns fats, glutathione helps it to flush out the toxins so they aren’t reabsorbed. Moreover, glutathione also helps your liver process fats more efficiently and improves insulin resistance. All of these reasons make it suitable for triggering a healthier weight loss.

How can one replenish the glutathione levels?

One can replenish the glutathione levels by using supplements, acquiring nutrient-dense food, exercise etc. However, one of the biggest problems of acquiring glutathione is its low bioavailability. Thus, it isn’t that easy to fix the problem by simply using glutathione supplements.

However, researchers have found a solution to it as well. They believe that glutathione precursors like N-acetyl cysteine could help to manage the bioavailability of the respective chemical compound.

Glutathione is a composition of sulfur compounds. Foods like onions and garlic, along with cruciferous vegetables can help to acquire glutathione. These vegetables might include,

  • Broccoli
  • Cauliflower
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Cabbage

Some other foods serving the purpose are,

  • Eggs
  • Legumes
  • Nuts
  • Lean protein from chicken or fish
  • Flaxseed
  • Whey
  • Milk thistle

Regular exercise can also help your body improve its glutathione levels. It also boosts your weight loss process. Avoid unhealthy foods and eat the right things at the right time in the right amounts.
