Malar Rash May Be A Symptom Of Underlying Health Conditions

In today’s age, modern techniques and technology have enabled the health industry to overcome many of the past challenges including the deadly diseases of the last century such as tuberculosis, plague, and many others.

The continuation in the research further shows how many of the everyday conditions that were otherwise considered normal may actually be a warning signal of underlying and potentially dangerous health conditions.

For example, skin conditions are often ignored and considered a reaction to the changes in the weather and the environment or just a rash or allergy. But in reality, the condition of your skin can tell a lot about you how healthy your organs truly are.

Malar rashes are among the skin problems that may be a sign of serious health issues. What are malar rashes? The red-colored lines spreading on cheeks and the bridge of your nose that you see often in older adults are known as malar rashes in scientific language.

More than often, malar rashes are taken as the skin’s reaction to low temperatures or just passed off as one of the signs of aging although a lot of adolescents and young adults have it as well.

To an extent, it is true that malar rash may appear as a reaction to environmental factors such as overexposure to the sunlight. However, it may also indicate another issue especially if it comes in combination with other symptoms and does not fade away with time.

What Causes Malar Rash?

There are many possible reasons for a malar rash to appear on the face. Some of these are as follows:

SLE or Lupus

Systemic lupus erythematosus or what is simply known as lupus is a dangerous autoimmune disease in which the immune system of the body attacks its own healthy tissues. One study showed that around 61% of the people with the condition develop a malar rash.

Seborrheic dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is a prevalent inflammatory condition of the skin. Scaly, dry, and irritated skin on the face, hairline, and the scalp are the common symptoms of it. The condition can be easily treated and is often the result of poor hygiene and changes in the surrounding of a person.

According to the statistics, around sixteen million people in the United States alone have Rosacea. The symptoms of rosacea are pus-filled or hard pimples, redness of the skin, and flushing.

Lyme disease

The main source of Lyme disease is the bite of a tick. The condition also causes malar rash and also comes with other symptoms like:

  • dizziness
  • joint pain
  • headaches
  • stiffness
Bloom syndrome

Also known as Bloom-Torre-Machacek syndrome, it is a condition characterized by a higher risk of developing cancerous tumors and short stature. Its symptoms also include eruptions on the skin as well as a malar rash.

How Is It Diagnosed?

The diagnosis of the cause for a malar rash can be difficult since it is a sign of a wide range of conditions from autoimmune diseases to bacterial infections. The doctor will take your medical history and perform a thorough physical examination.

You may also be asked to undergo specific tests. For example, if your doctor may think you have lupus, he will probably ask you to get blood and urine tests, X-rays, and an anti-nuclear antibody test done. The treatment is also dependent on an accurate diagnosis of the underlying condition.
