A research study, published in the Australian Journal of Basic and Applied Sciences, reveals that vitamin-D and zinc can treat psoriasis naturally. Researchers from the Al-Furat Al-Awsat University in Iraq suggest that a decline in nutrients causes such condition to occur. In their research, they noted that patients, suffering from psoriasis, had notably lower levels of vitamin D and zinc. Both of these nutrients are significant for their immunity-boosting properties.

For the study, the team collected blood samples from the patients of psoriasis. The subjects were undergoing treatment for psoriasis at a local hospital in Iraq.
The researchers compared the blood samples of the patients with that of healthy individuals. It was found that the levels of vitamin-D in the affected individuals were 60% lower than the healthy people. Similarly, zinc levels of people with psoriasis were lower by a third, compared to those who do not have the condition.
The researchers reported that the decreased level of Vitamin-D may be caused by shedding of the skin cells. This effectively hinders the skin to convert sunlight into vitamin D. Moreover, the decreased level of vitamin D has great effects in the pathogenesis of psoriasis.
Note that a body with a low level of Vitamin-D is at greater risk for dermatological diseases. This is because vitamins serve as immune regulators in the skin. Their deficiency, combined with the zinc, can set up a vicious cycle and cause further complications.

For the study, the researchers took a woman under examination. She was diagnosed with psoriasis and admitted to the Sikkim Manipal Institute of Medical Sciences. She was given zinc supplements, twice a day, to manage the symptoms. The researchers found that on the fifth day of the treatment her old lesions began to heal. Moreover, no new pustules were formed. After 15 days of the zinc therapy, the lesions cleared with no relapse noted after a six-month follow-up.
Thus the studies conclude that vitamin-D and zinc can serve to treat psoriasis by natural means.
