Blood pressure refers to the force that your blood exerts against the walls of your arteries. It keeps rising and falling throughout the day, however, having a high blood pressure for a long time may be dangerous.

An Innovative Approach
Researchers belonging to Birmingham and Boston have developed a program to improve the control rates of hypertension with much lower expenses as compared to the conventional programs. Their findings are present in the journal Clinical Cardiology.
The research team recruited 130 people into their program whose blood pressure was not under control at the beginning of their study. The scientists educated all the participants regarding the usage of a Bluetooth-enabled blood pressure device. They instructed them to keep a look at their blood pressure twice every day at their homes.
This simple program aided over 81 percent of the people in controlling their blood pressure. What’s interesting is that they were able to achieve all this in less than 2 months.
According to the scientists, the results are striking, especially due to the extremely short span of time the participants required to control their blood pressure.
How does this Approach Work?
The researchers combined different strategies to create a program. The usage of Bluetooth-enabled devices caused the measurements to get transmitted into the medical records of the participants.
Each one of the individuals was also provided with access to the “patient navigators” who had been trained in using the clinical algorithms. These algorithms were created by specialists to assess and ensure that a person is getting an accurate dose of medication.
The idea behind this approach was the belief of the researchers that the conventional model of treating hypertension by visiting the doctor has failed to provide adequate control over the problem. Moreover, it was not a sustainable method as a lot of patients were unable to keep up with the follow-ups.
This pilot study yielded excellent results and the research team aspires to scale up this study in the future. This is to make sure that this method will work for extended periods of time and for other groups of people as well.
The researchers are also hopeful that this method will considerably decrease the cost related to the management of hypertension. Moreover, it will reduce the risk of dangerous health complications related to high blood pressures.
